Burgess108 Report for August 10, 2008

Unfortunately, I'm writing the final Burgess-108 update 3 months earlier than I had hoped. We ran a lean but well organized campaign - with lots of help, guidance and support from the longest list of heroes I've ever had. But we fell 76 votes short. Without the benefit of enough distance to think objectively, the top two things that seemed to hurt us were: low turn out, and 4 candidates in the primary. Menominee County had a 16.5% turnout, and Dickinson (with a hot local recall issue on the ballot) had about 30%. We did extremely well in Dickinson, so it looks like a higher turnout would've favored us.

It was a fantastic experience. I made many new friends, became reacquainted with many old friends, and went places and did things I wouldn't otherwise have had the opportunity to experience. I enjoyed every aspect of the campaign - right up until the final vote totals. While it is far too early to decide what the future might hold, I'm not ruling anything out. I have made two decisions for the immediate future. I'm going to 1) sleep, and 2) vacuum (two things I haven't done much of lately). After that . . . . . ? As a couple of dear friends have already told me - I live to run another day. Could be. Just could be.
For all that you did to help me, all during this most excellent adventure, I am more grateful than words can express. All along the way I knew that I had a solid base of supporters to give me advise, encouragement, money, and assistance. You rolled up your sleeves and compiled data bases, put up or put together yardsigns, made phone calls, introduced me to friends and neighbors, hosted fundraisers, gave me a place to lay my weary head, designed campaign literature, and did so many other things - it still takes my breath away.

Thank you all, with all my heart,

Janis Burgess
